How to Bust Your 6 Biggest Excuses

By Kara Wahlgren

THE EXCUSE: “I’m too busy!”

Instead of letting your endless to-do list take priority over your health goals, treat exercise like any other important task. “It’s about prioritizing and planning ahead. Set a time and schedule it, as if it were a dental appointment,” says Jimi Varner, a trainer on MTV’s I Used to be Fat series. Of course, there will be days when you really are too swamped to squeeze in a full workout—but that doesn’t mean you should skip it altogether. Instead, try to carve out a few minutes to break a sweat. “If you have just 10 minutes, it’s still progress,” Varner says. “It doesn’t have to be an hour and a half, so knock it off.” Go outdoors and do a few sprints, or try a time-crunch-friendly program like FOCUS T25® or P90X3™.

THE EXCUSE: “I’m beat.”

Whether you’re sore from yesterday’s workout or drained from a long week at work, don’t bail out just because you’re low on energy. Start slowly, and gauge how you’re feeling after the first few minutes. “It’s okay to exercise at a lower intensity for a shorter time. Start doing it, and really listen to your body to see if this is nurturing or punishing,” says Michelle Segar, PhD, Associate Director for University of Michigan’s Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy Center and a motivation and behavioral sustainability researcher. “This helps get people more in tune with their body and actually can improve their desire to move.” Promise yourself you’ll do the first five minutes of your workout—once you get going, chances are you’ll go ahead and push through.

THE EXCUSE: “I’m broke.”

When you’re on a tight budget, it can be hard to justify the cost of a monthly gym membership. But you don’t need Globo-Gym to get in shape. “Walking is among the best ways to move, and you can do it anywhere,” Segar says. And Varner suggests picking up furniture movers (usually under $10) and using them for lunges or mountain climbers. And, ahem, we can recommend a few DVD training programs that won’t break the bank.

THE EXCUSE: “The gym is intimidating.”

You might feel like everyone’s staring at you, but the truth is, they’re probably way too busy worrying about what they look like. So get out of hermit mode and go build a support system. “Everybody you see in these classes was once in your shoes,” Varner says. “They understand how you feel and the courage it takes to be there. And they will be more than happy to help and be supportive and friendly.”

THE EXCUSE: “I’m bored.”

If you do the same workout every…single…day, it’s easy to fall into a rut. But there’s no rule that you have to stick to a rigid, repetitive fitness regimen. “You can change up any part of your routine,” Segar says. Renew your enthusiasm by starting a new program, joining a new class, ditching the treadmill for a hiking trail, or making a friendly weight-loss wager with a friend.

THE EXCUSE: “I’m dieting instead.”

Just because you’re counting calories, it doesn’t mean you have carte blanche to chill on the couch. “Diet alone works well when weight loss is the goal, but adding exercise to the mix can enhance the results,” Varner says. “Exercise has countless other health benefits than just weight loss—you’ll look better, feel better, sleep better, have more energy, and be more productive at work and home.” And with all those benefits, why would you want to make excuses?

Ask the Expert: Are Cheat Meals OK?

The Short Answer:

It’s absolutely OK to have a cheat meal! If the rest of your diet plan is tight, there’s nothing wrong with cutting loose once or twice a week. In fact, the shift in calories may help you avoid plateaus. Also, it keeps you sane. After all, life is too short not to eat the occasional donut.

The Long Answer:

Now that you’ve stopped twerking for joy around the room and returned to your screen, I’ll explain why the occasional cheat meal is OK. As I said, they are a good way to ward off potential plateaus. They also break up the stress commonly associated with diet and keep you on track.

Cheat meals fight plateaus.

While we live in a modern world, our bodies still operate under some very primitive rules. When you eat at a calorie deficit while working out regularly, your body doesn’t get the memo that you could stop at any time. Instead, it assumes you’re trudging across a desolate African plain with nary a Souplantation in sight, desperately tracking a wildebeest in hopes of feeding your starving family. (Some might argue that Plyo X offers a similar sensation.)

To deal with this stress, your body will sometimes slow down its metabolism and hold on to emergency fuel stores (body fat) to survive. We call this “starvation mode” and because you’re not burning fat, it creates a weight loss plateau. While the obvious solution is to increase your calories in general, cheat meals are also effective because they give your body a little “feast” break in the middle of the “famine” to convince it to keep burning those love handles away.

In fact, we often suggest people zigzag their calories from a large deficit to a slight surplus over the course of a week to break this type of plateau. A cheat meal or two, provided the rest of your eating is extremely clean, can create such a zigzag.

Cheat meals strengthen willpower.

In their excellent book Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, Dr. Roy Baumeister and science writer John Tierney discuss the concept of “decision fatigue,” the idea that willpower, just like our muscles, can give out after a while. “When asked whether making decisions would deplete their willpower and make them vulnerable to temptation, most people say no. They don’t realize that decision fatigue helps explain why ordinary, sensible people get angry at their colleagues and family, splurge on clothes, buy junk food at the supermarket, and can’t resist the car dealer’s offer to rustproof their new sedan.”

Think of cheat meals the same way you think of recovery days. They give your willpower a chance to rest and restore, reducing the chance that you’ll fall off the wagon in a bigger way.

Cheat meals relieve stress.

Survival mode suggests cheat meals relieve physical stress. Decision fatigue suggests they relieve mental stress. There’s also a third type of stress they relieve: emotional stress. Turning around your diet can be really hard. Sometimes, eating clean means you’re walking away from foods you’ve looked to your whole life for comfort, nourishment, celebration, and security. The fact that they are absolute crap and they were slowly killing you is beside the point. They still have an enormous amount of emotional resonance. As long as you don’t think it’ll cause a relapse, there’s no reason to completely walk away from cake on your birthday or a hot dog at the baseball game. Whenever I’m visiting my parents in Atlanta, you better believe I help myself to my mom’s epic banana cream pie. In fact, only having it on special occasions makes it all the more delicious.

What if I don’t want a cheat meal?

Although I’ve put forth some compelling arguments for a cheat meal, I don’t want to strong-arm you into succumbing to temptation. If you’re keeping it 100% clean and that works for you, go for it. For some people cold turkey is the only way to avoid stumbling into bad habits.

On a semi-side note, a funny thing happens when you eat healthy for a while. Your idea of a cheat meal redefines itself. As a teenager, I could polish off a large meat lover’s pizza and two liters of Coke. Today, two slices of veggie pizza, a huge salad, and a 12-ounce craft beer is my idea of indulgence. As for my mom’s banana cream pie, anything more than a medium-sized slice and I get ill. (You don’t want to know how much of it I used to eat.)

As you enjoy your cheat meals, pay attention to how your body reacts. When abused, refined sugar is toxic, but most Americans have built up a tolerance. They can’t feel how it tears them apart, spiking blood sugar and torquing their hormones. When you don’t normally consume it in excess, occasional consumption can make you feel sick. That’s your body telling you to eat less next time.

Finally, a couple of cheat meal myths.

Some “experts” claim that binging on a cheat meal to the point of illness is a good thing because it keeps you on the straight and narrow for the rest of the week. This is stupid advice given by fools who don’t understand the brief gorging refractory period involved with being a chronic overeater. If a meal makes you sick, you’ve poisoned yourself—not something you want to do on a regular basis.

Lastly, if someone suggests post-cheat meal “tricks” to mitigate the damage, don’t bother. It’s too late. A glass of lemon water or a series of antiquated calisthenics will be about as effective as trying to pop the Goodyear Blimp with a toothpick.

So if you think it’s right for you, go ahead and have a cheat meal. Anticipate it before you eat it, enjoy it while it’s happening, and own it once it’s done. Then get back on your horse in the morning.

Are you the tortoise or the hare?

Do you feel like you are losing the fight?  You have tried the quick fade diets and they get you some results but you always fall back to where you started? Tortoise_and_hare_rackham

In the world that we live in today we are constantly bombarded with get rich quick schemes; get thin by just adding a sprinkle of this or eating a certain diet.  All of these things are things that I would consider “Hare” products.  Their advertising says that it is so simple that anyone can do it but just like the hare in the Aesop’s Fables the hare ran ahead of the tortoise and stopped to take a nap, the tortoise who did fall into the traps of having to go fast knew that slow and steady wins the race kept plugging along and did win the race! I won’t argue that some of these “Hare” products and programs have some results but as soon as you stop them we truly haven’t learned to change your life and as soon as you stop the results disappear and you are no further ahead than when you started.Modeling our lives in the way of the tortoise is where true results comes from.  Through consistency we build habits that will change our lives and the lives of those around us.  Don’t focus on the habits that you need to change focus on the habits that you are building.

What is your WHY and what are you doing with it?

What is your WHY?

So every week I send out a message to all of you in hopes that I can touch the life of at least one new person.  To help change your life so that you may have an easier time with work, life, and be an example to those around you.  As I approach two year of being a BeachBody coach I have been able to help so many people and each one has enriched my life and strengthened my commitment to reach out to more people.

So this week message is just to ask you a few questions and then to ask you to step out of your comfort zone.

  • So first where were you 5 years ago and were you better off physically then or now?
  • If you where in the shape that you wanted to be in how would it change you?  Would you be more comfortable at the beach/swimming pool?  Would you be off medication?  Would you be an example to your friends, parents, and kids?  Would you be less worried about your families history of diabetes, cancer, or other illness?
  • What would you do if you could not fail?
Think about these questions.  We are all in different places, we all have different WHYs but after you have answered these questions I need you to step out of your comfort zone and contact me.  Let me get you into one of my support groups and lets turn those WHYs into “Why not me”.I am here to help but I cannot help without you reaching out to me!  So reply to this email, pick up the phone and call but don’t let another day go by without improving your life!!Contact Info:

Important notice!!Have you ever been “grand-fathered” into something? You know, the moment you feel like you got an awesome deal for acting at the right time? Then listen up because that time is NOW!!Shakeology is increasing by $.33 a day for the original flavors, however, the vegan formulas are staying the same. It’s still a great value at just $4.33 a meal but you have the opportunity to get an even better deal than that.

You see, when Beachbody launched Shakeology, gas prices were less than $2/gallon… We are paying over $4/gallon now! Wit the price of gas increasing over 125%, that impacts every raw ingredient price and has resulted in dramatic shipping rate increases, but Shakeology’s price only increased 8.33% during that same period of time. It’s always tough to deal with a price increase, but believe me we have done all we can do to deliver Shakeology at a value and in any previous pricing model I have used, Shakeology should be priced closer to $189-$199… So the overall increase to ORIGINAL flavors is $10… But here’s the great news…

If you are on Home Direct now… You are ALL LOCKED IN to the CURRENT Shakeology price. That means you KEEP your $119.96 rate AND FREE SHIPPING (saving you an additional $12) and are GRAND-FATHERED in to hold that price for L-I-F-E.!! If you’re not, on April 1st the price is going up. So, if you have been on the fence, NOW is your chance to get LOCKED in for a special price…. you can still opt out whenever you’d like, but who would want to when you can save $120 a year?

Weekly Newsletter – Why am I so sore?

Why am I so sore?

So if you aren’t following me on FaceBook then you haven’t seen my new Virtual Fit Club that I am doing every Saturday morning.  This is a great chance for for people watch different Beachbody programs plus see myself beat myself up in those workouts.

This past weekend I did a workout from RebAbs.  It was a lot of fun but it was a workout that my body was not use to and I really pushed myself, then after with it being such a nice day (it finally felt like spring), I decided that it was time for a nice run!  And as to top it off it was my 8 week opportunity to give blood at our local ARUP Blood Donation Center.

I felt I was doing good but when I woke up Sunday morning I was sore and not just a little bit, I am talking it is time to for some Icy Hot sore.  Yes even me after several years of working out stills gets sore.  But what causes the soreness that I was experience?

Before I looked into the what actually caused soreness I always thought it was the lactic acid in the body but to come to find out that lactic acid isn’t what causes the long term soreness in the body and it actually micro-tears in the muscles as the lactic acid is washed out of the body 30-60 minutes after the workout.

So when you workout, or simply over do it with any physical activity you are causing damage to the muscle fiber.  This damage to the muscle can become inflamed and this is what causes the soreness.  This soreness is not necessarily a bad thing as the muscles will release a chemical irritant, which irritate pain receptors, which increases blood flow to the area which helps with repairing/building the muscles!

When we are doing pretty much any new program we should expect soreness which is one reason you should stick with the schedule that is laid out with the program that you choose, as they are laid out in such a way to let those sore muscle rest and recover!

So the next time you are sore make sure that you are

-Giving those muscle plenty of time to rest
-You are continually giving the muscle a nice massage
-You are Stretching the muscles
-You can apply ice and then heat
-You maintain a proper diet so the body has what it needs to rebuild the muscle including plenty of water.

Saturday Virtual Fit Club

Every Saturday I am doing a workout, so I decided to share!  This is an opportunity for everyone to see the different workouts that Beachbody has, and plus you can see that I actually do the workouts and not just talk a lot.

This Saturday we are going to be doing a workout from INSANITY!!  Come check it out!!  The workout starts at 10 EST/9 CST/8 MST/7 PST and will last roughly an hour.  Bring a towel and your water if you want to follow Shaun T, or just check in to see what all the INSANITY is about!!

Weekly Newsletter – Motivation VS Inspiration

Motivation VS Inspiration

So in the world of working out (really in anything that we do) the hardest thing to do is in the long run is keeping motivation and continue to keep up the consistency of whatever that we choose to do.

If you have followed me for a while than you have probably have heard me say “Use other people and their story as Inspiration and don’t use their story as a measuring stick.”  Depending on how you look at stories from Beachbody or from other source it can be looked at in two different ways and I have heard both from team members over the past two years.

The first way is looking at as a Measuring Stick.  I had someone say half joking say I followed the program and ate right and I didn’t lose 30 lbs like the person on the infomercial.  It is important to remember that each of us is in different places in our lives and in different physical conditions.

The second way and the correct way to look at motivational stories is to look what can be done.  Understand that people had to change their lives and in many cases are still changing their lives to improve their health.

These are great examples of Inspiration but what is Inspiration?

The act of influencing or suggesting opinions

The main thing to notice is that inspiration does not do anything to bring you to actually do work.  It only influences or suggests.  That is where motivation comes in.

Motivation is: force, stimulus, or influence : incentivedrive

I have had many people come to me and say that they need help because they know they need to change but they don’t have the motivation I attempt to help them find why they are talking to me.

What is it that motivates them to change the way they have eaten for year, acted for years and many time comfortably lived for years?  While each person is different no matter what the reason no matter what it is, it needs to be personal and it needs to be stronger then sore muscles and convenient un-healthy fast food.

I post daily, inspirational quotes, pictures and stories but these are there to support your motivation but it will take personal drive to and a person motivation for you to get up and start changing your life.

So contact me and let us find that motivation and harness it and lets change your life!

This is what no one else can do for you this is what each one of us needs to find in us to help us push forward each day.

Can you name the person that was told he was “too stupid to learn anything?” and was later fired from two jobs for being un-productive?  But later was asked “How did it feel to fail 1000 time?”  He replied, “I didn’t fail 1000 times.  The light bulb was an invention that took a 1000 steps.”  You would be right if you said Thomas Edison.  He created over 1000 different inventions, but do you think that he was able to do so by quitting?

10 years after retiring for the world of boxing this fighter decided to return to the ring.  When he returned to the ring people laughed and scoffed at him as he was slow and easily 50 pounds overweight, but he persevered and worked hard.  After 5 years of hard training and focusing on coming back he was given a chance to box for the title which he ended up losing.  Most people would have given up saying that they did their best but not this boxer.  He continued for the next 3.5 trainer and reaching for the coveted belt and on November 5, 1994 this 45 year old man beat his competitor in a 10 round fight to becomes the oldest heavyweight champ in history.  Many of us know him and the guy that sells grills on late night TV but if you said Gorge Foreman!

These are just two stories of people that did listen to the nay sayers and focused on their goal and didn’t let anything stand in their way.

What goals are you ready to achieve and are you ready to all of those around you that you can do whatever it takes?!?

Important notice!!

Have you ever been “grand-fathered” into something? You know, the moment you feel like you got an awesome deal for acting at the right time? Then listen up because that time is NOW!!

Shakeology is increasing by $.33 a day for the original flavors, however, the vegan formulas are staying the same.

Weekly Newsletter – Dedication, Drive, and Discipline

 Dedication, Drive, and Discipline

Dedication, Drive, and Discipline

By Mike Griego

Dedication, drive, and discipline, something that many people have lost. We have all been sold on instant gratification. It isn’t necessarily our fault, we have been conditioned that way. (Please note I am using ‘us’ and ‘we’ as general terms.) Constant Media bombardment whether it is television, movies, music, radio, magazines, books, and even video games has lead the way in that department. The past 50 years leading to now has definitely had an impact on the nation and ultimately the world. The “it can be done immediately.” mentality has destroyed us.

If it doesn’t happen “right now right now”, a lot of the time we turn the other cheek and walk away. Many examples are; ‘it was too tough’, ‘didn’t give you what you were looking for’, ‘didn’t meet up to expectations when first started’, ‘journey would be take too long’. Or excuses start to build immediately like; ‘I am not smart, fast, skilled, intelligent, etc. enough’, ‘too tall, short, skinny, fat, out of shape, etc.’ and so on.

All we need to do is sit back and dig deep into ourselves. We all have the ability to achieve great things, we just need to get in the proper mindset. We need to sit back, remember what our grandparents and our great grandparents did to achieve success. They didn’t wish, hope or miracle something to happen. They used true grit and hard work for their success and achievement. So if you find yourself in a rut with your fitness goals, business goals, school goals or whatever it is you are doing, just remember that we ALL have the ability to achieve great things. We just need to lace up our boots and dig into life and kick some butt!

Weekly Success Story

Weekly Newsletter – Planning, snacking, thinking and Throwing it out!!!

Planning, snacking, thinking and Throwing it out!!! Getting on a eating schedule is one of the main challenges not only for those that are trying to lose weight but also for the people that are trying to maintain or even gain muscle. There are a few things that make this difficult but the one that people seem to have the hardest time with is snacking!! We tend to snack for a few reasons. Our bodies need more food due to blood sugar issues, we have emotional reasons or the food is front of us and it is yummy ;) . So what are something’s that we can do to help curb?

Plan out your day.  If you have planned food and snacks throughout the day you are more likely to maintain a steady blood sugar level and your cravings will not be as bad.  I personally found that if I am not hungry I am less likely to snack on the doughnuts that the boss brought in as a reward, or cake for someone’s Birthday.

Focus on what you are putting in your mouth. Before you take a bite, close your eyes and ask why am I eating this? See if you can figure out why you eat something? Is it you don’t think that you will succeed? Do it make you feel better? This is the time you need ask why I am changing my eating and working out. Is it because you have a history of illness in your family, is it because you are trying to be a good example to your kids and the people around you, do you want to look good on the beach? Whatever the reason I bet it is better than the piece of cake that you are about to eat.

I have planned and have focused but I can’t seem to stop myself!!! Get rid of it!!! If you can’t resist then it is time to throw it out. You will probably have family members that will complain but in the long run I think that they will be happier to have you around then those treats. With whatever you are doing moderation, constancy and habits are the key.  It may difficult at first but if you stick with it you will get there!

TRANSFORMATION STORY OF THE WEEK

This is an absolutely AMAZING transformation! I want to give Justin a huge congratulations for the transformation he has achieved! I personally know this gentleman and he is a definite inspiration.

After the birth of his first child, Justin watched his wife lose all her baby weight and realized that he had to make some serious lifestyle changes if he wanted to be there for his family for years to come. Mr. Justin had worked himself hard with not one but two rounds of P90X and one round of Insanity. When those were completed, he used Tai Cheng to help him recover from the vigors of those workouts.

Justin is now down 121 lbs and UP $1,000 from the Beachbody Challenge! He is now setting up to do his third round of P90X to keep pushing forward on the bandwagon of results! Here is what he had to say!:

“My over all fitness level improved to heights I never thought I could reach. … Now I have ran two half marathons and will be running a third half marathon in a few months. My over all strength, conditioning and balance are the best they have ever been in my life. … Following the programs and nutrition there is no way you will not see results. I am now working to help others get fit and it is all because of the fire that Beachbody has lit in me.”

Weekly Newsletter – Team Results Pictures!!! Great reason why to join a challenge group!

A support system.

By Mike Griego (Team Engage Coach)

Why do we need one? That is the question most humans generally ask. What in the world would I need a support system right? “I am MY OWN support system!”…is generally the phrase we belt out. Don’t get me wrong, that is absolutely a fantastic attitude to have. We are our own and best cheerleaders. Yet, what do we do when we need a shoulder to lean on? We can always pick ourselves up in times of need. Positive thoughts always brings us up into a better place . Yet sometimes it is a lot harder to do.

Having a group that has got your back is an extremely helpful tool. A group is there to let you vent, pouring our your frustrations instead of bottling them up inside. Bottled emotions of negativity is where self destruction can easily begin. A group is there to prop you up when you are down but also to praise you when credit is due. A group is there to give support during those tough times and injuries. They are there to kick your rear into gear when you are not feeling the pace or they boost you heavily to push harder than you ever have before.

A positive support network of friends, family, and even strangers has been proven to help people achieve goals, no matter what they are looking to accomplish. A group that meets daily or even weekly can give confidence to the actions done. It is especially true when posting accountability of what was done for the day or days prior to the meeting. Though things may not have been completed on time, tasks could have been rushed through, all effort wasn’t given to a project at hand, a workout could have been skipped, that group is there to support you. They will give you constructive ideas on how to better improve where you lack, not bad mouthing you because of what happened. They will point out flaws and make suggestions on how to make reverse course.

So if you have ever wondered if having a support group is worth it, I can most certainly say it is.

Weekly Newsletter 1/27/2013

Our bodies are made up of mostly water but we tend to neglect this most vital ingredient. Why is water so important, what does it help us with, and how much should you be drinking?!?!

Watch me in my explanation of hydration in the latest version of Coach’s Corner

An average man’s body weight is made up of 57% water!! That is a lot of water, and being that we have so much water in our bodies it is important to make sure the we are getting enough.

The lack of water can cause issues from tiredness, constipation, plain old tiredness and many, many more issues.

There are several ways to calculate how much water you should be drinking and one of them is to drink half of your body weight in oz. So if you weight 160 lbs you should be drinking 80 oz.

What about drinking too much water and water intoxication? What intoxication is the dilution of sodium in the body but is usually only seen in infants under six and sometimes athletes when they are sweating a lot. An adult with healthy kidneys can process up to 15 liters of water a day! So as long as you are drinking you water throughout the day and not all at one time you should be fine.

Food can also help or hinder you attempt to stay hydrated fruits and veggies like watermelon, squashes, apples, etc… can help you get the water you need through it is harder to determine how much water you are actually getting for our foods, on the upside many of these foods will provide you with nutrients that you need. On the downside foods with high sodium or diuretics can cause the need for more water and while in the right amounts can help the body function better, in large amounts it will cause the body to start retaining water.

So whither you are staying hydrated from drinking or from eating make sure that you stay hydrated to get the benefits of:

  • Better Body Temperature Regulation
  • Increased Body Lubrication
  • Improved weight maintenance
  • Toxin Removal
  • Physical Efficiency
