It is through persistence of each day that builds on the previous day and we have 124 days to build for that family reunion, class reunion, wedding, vacation, etc…

How to Bust Your 6 Biggest Excuses

By Kara Wahlgren

THE EXCUSE: “I’m too busy!”

Instead of letting your endless to-do list take priority over your health goals, treat exercise like any other important task. “It’s about prioritizing and planning ahead. Set a time and schedule it, as if it were a dental appointment,” says Jimi Varner, a trainer on MTV’s I Used to be Fat series. Of course, there will be days when you really are too swamped to squeeze in a full workout—but that doesn’t mean you should skip it altogether. Instead, try to carve out a few minutes to break a sweat. “If you have just 10 minutes, it’s still progress,” Varner says. “It doesn’t have to be an hour and a half, so knock it off.” Go outdoors and do a few sprints, or try a time-crunch-friendly program like FOCUS T25® or P90X3™.

THE EXCUSE: “I’m beat.”

Whether you’re sore from yesterday’s workout or drained from a long week at work, don’t bail out just because you’re low on energy. Start slowly, and gauge how you’re feeling after the first few minutes. “It’s okay to exercise at a lower intensity for a shorter time. Start doing it, and really listen to your body to see if this is nurturing or punishing,” says Michelle Segar, PhD, Associate Director for University of Michigan’s Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy Center and a motivation and behavioral sustainability researcher. “This helps get people more in tune with their body and actually can improve their desire to move.” Promise yourself you’ll do the first five minutes of your workout—once you get going, chances are you’ll go ahead and push through.

THE EXCUSE: “I’m broke.”

When you’re on a tight budget, it can be hard to justify the cost of a monthly gym membership. But you don’t need Globo-Gym to get in shape. “Walking is among the best ways to move, and you can do it anywhere,” Segar says. And Varner suggests picking up furniture movers (usually under $10) and using them for lunges or mountain climbers. And, ahem, we can recommend a few DVD training programs that won’t break the bank.

THE EXCUSE: “The gym is intimidating.”

You might feel like everyone’s staring at you, but the truth is, they’re probably way too busy worrying about what they look like. So get out of hermit mode and go build a support system. “Everybody you see in these classes was once in your shoes,” Varner says. “They understand how you feel and the courage it takes to be there. And they will be more than happy to help and be supportive and friendly.”

THE EXCUSE: “I’m bored.”

If you do the same workout every…single…day, it’s easy to fall into a rut. But there’s no rule that you have to stick to a rigid, repetitive fitness regimen. “You can change up any part of your routine,” Segar says. Renew your enthusiasm by starting a new program, joining a new class, ditching the treadmill for a hiking trail, or making a friendly weight-loss wager with a friend.

THE EXCUSE: “I’m dieting instead.”

Just because you’re counting calories, it doesn’t mean you have carte blanche to chill on the couch. “Diet alone works well when weight loss is the goal, but adding exercise to the mix can enhance the results,” Varner says. “Exercise has countless other health benefits than just weight loss—you’ll look better, feel better, sleep better, have more energy, and be more productive at work and home.” And with all those benefits, why would you want to make excuses?

Ask the Expert: Are Cheat Meals OK?

The Short Answer:

It’s absolutely OK to have a cheat meal! If the rest of your diet plan is tight, there’s nothing wrong with cutting loose once or twice a week. In fact, the shift in calories may help you avoid plateaus. Also, it keeps you sane. After all, life is too short not to eat the occasional donut.

The Long Answer:

Now that you’ve stopped twerking for joy around the room and returned to your screen, I’ll explain why the occasional cheat meal is OK. As I said, they are a good way to ward off potential plateaus. They also break up the stress commonly associated with diet and keep you on track.

Cheat meals fight plateaus.

While we live in a modern world, our bodies still operate under some very primitive rules. When you eat at a calorie deficit while working out regularly, your body doesn’t get the memo that you could stop at any time. Instead, it assumes you’re trudging across a desolate African plain with nary a Souplantation in sight, desperately tracking a wildebeest in hopes of feeding your starving family. (Some might argue that Plyo X offers a similar sensation.)

To deal with this stress, your body will sometimes slow down its metabolism and hold on to emergency fuel stores (body fat) to survive. We call this “starvation mode” and because you’re not burning fat, it creates a weight loss plateau. While the obvious solution is to increase your calories in general, cheat meals are also effective because they give your body a little “feast” break in the middle of the “famine” to convince it to keep burning those love handles away.

In fact, we often suggest people zigzag their calories from a large deficit to a slight surplus over the course of a week to break this type of plateau. A cheat meal or two, provided the rest of your eating is extremely clean, can create such a zigzag.

Cheat meals strengthen willpower.

In their excellent book Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, Dr. Roy Baumeister and science writer John Tierney discuss the concept of “decision fatigue,” the idea that willpower, just like our muscles, can give out after a while. “When asked whether making decisions would deplete their willpower and make them vulnerable to temptation, most people say no. They don’t realize that decision fatigue helps explain why ordinary, sensible people get angry at their colleagues and family, splurge on clothes, buy junk food at the supermarket, and can’t resist the car dealer’s offer to rustproof their new sedan.”

Think of cheat meals the same way you think of recovery days. They give your willpower a chance to rest and restore, reducing the chance that you’ll fall off the wagon in a bigger way.

Cheat meals relieve stress.

Survival mode suggests cheat meals relieve physical stress. Decision fatigue suggests they relieve mental stress. There’s also a third type of stress they relieve: emotional stress. Turning around your diet can be really hard. Sometimes, eating clean means you’re walking away from foods you’ve looked to your whole life for comfort, nourishment, celebration, and security. The fact that they are absolute crap and they were slowly killing you is beside the point. They still have an enormous amount of emotional resonance. As long as you don’t think it’ll cause a relapse, there’s no reason to completely walk away from cake on your birthday or a hot dog at the baseball game. Whenever I’m visiting my parents in Atlanta, you better believe I help myself to my mom’s epic banana cream pie. In fact, only having it on special occasions makes it all the more delicious.

What if I don’t want a cheat meal?

Although I’ve put forth some compelling arguments for a cheat meal, I don’t want to strong-arm you into succumbing to temptation. If you’re keeping it 100% clean and that works for you, go for it. For some people cold turkey is the only way to avoid stumbling into bad habits.

On a semi-side note, a funny thing happens when you eat healthy for a while. Your idea of a cheat meal redefines itself. As a teenager, I could polish off a large meat lover’s pizza and two liters of Coke. Today, two slices of veggie pizza, a huge salad, and a 12-ounce craft beer is my idea of indulgence. As for my mom’s banana cream pie, anything more than a medium-sized slice and I get ill. (You don’t want to know how much of it I used to eat.)

As you enjoy your cheat meals, pay attention to how your body reacts. When abused, refined sugar is toxic, but most Americans have built up a tolerance. They can’t feel how it tears them apart, spiking blood sugar and torquing their hormones. When you don’t normally consume it in excess, occasional consumption can make you feel sick. That’s your body telling you to eat less next time.

Finally, a couple of cheat meal myths.

Some “experts” claim that binging on a cheat meal to the point of illness is a good thing because it keeps you on the straight and narrow for the rest of the week. This is stupid advice given by fools who don’t understand the brief gorging refractory period involved with being a chronic overeater. If a meal makes you sick, you’ve poisoned yourself—not something you want to do on a regular basis.

Lastly, if someone suggests post-cheat meal “tricks” to mitigate the damage, don’t bother. It’s too late. A glass of lemon water or a series of antiquated calisthenics will be about as effective as trying to pop the Goodyear Blimp with a toothpick.

So if you think it’s right for you, go ahead and have a cheat meal. Anticipate it before you eat it, enjoy it while it’s happening, and own it once it’s done. Then get back on your horse in the morning.

Are you the tortoise or the hare?

Do you feel like you are losing the fight?  You have tried the quick fade diets and they get you some results but you always fall back to where you started? Tortoise_and_hare_rackham

In the world that we live in today we are constantly bombarded with get rich quick schemes; get thin by just adding a sprinkle of this or eating a certain diet.  All of these things are things that I would consider “Hare” products.  Their advertising says that it is so simple that anyone can do it but just like the hare in the Aesop’s Fables the hare ran ahead of the tortoise and stopped to take a nap, the tortoise who did fall into the traps of having to go fast knew that slow and steady wins the race kept plugging along and did win the race! I won’t argue that some of these “Hare” products and programs have some results but as soon as you stop them we truly haven’t learned to change your life and as soon as you stop the results disappear and you are no further ahead than when you started.Modeling our lives in the way of the tortoise is where true results comes from.  Through consistency we build habits that will change our lives and the lives of those around us.  Don’t focus on the habits that you need to change focus on the habits that you are building.

First Physique Show!! Body Beast Classic.

So recently I went down to Las Vegas for Beachbody’s annual Beachbody Summit.  One of this years activities was the first ever Beast Classic physique show.

The week preparing for the show was tough.  Lots of calorie watching and making sure that I had the correct ratios of protein, carbs and fat, drinking up to 2 gallons of water a day and watching the sodium intake.  I am glad that I did it.

I had the pleasure to stay and competing with my new friend Ian.  He is a team member of a fellow coach and simply is a great guy.  Here we are after the show.Ian

The first day was pre-qualification and that was a ton of hurry up and wait, but the experience was incredible as it was interesting to see how the judging was done and meeting the other competitors.  And posing is not simple, huge respect gained for people that do these shows for a living.

The next day was the actual show and it was nerve-racking and exciting at the same time.  Nothing like getting in front of a couple of thousand people in nothing but board shorts.  I was on of the top 10 finalist which was my goal.  Take a look I should be the fifth person (yes I do the splits):

The question has come up of “Will you do it again?”, I don’t know at this point (tho I am leaning toward yes), but only time will tell.

The best thing is that my body was made at home.  I didn’t visit a gym except for a few times for fun.  I used the premium supplement from Body Beast along with the nutrition guide that comes with the program.  Simple as 1, 2, 3.

I have a team of people who are currently doing this program and many other programs to change their life.  Come join us, click here to contact me!  Or join the Team here: Free TeamBeachBody Account

Daily Success 5/30/2013 – I was put into the hospital and diagnosed with Anorexia

Most of these stories are about people who lost weight. Mine’s about that, too. But I lost something else that I’ve been battling my whole life—severe, self-destructive depression.
23-Veronica-TF
In high school, I tried to hurt myself, so I was put into the hospital and diagnosed with Anorexia. I wasn’t Anorexic—I was just too depressed to eat. So I spent the next 12 years out of it on 10 different anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, and anti-psychotic medications.

I managed until my husband deployed overseas and I was left alone with our baby. Once again, spiraled so far that I was hospitalized and prescribed medication that made me gain weight. When I became pregnant again, I ended up at 217 pounds—after delivering twins. And I just kept gaining.

I can’t say it crept up on me, but one day when I saw a picture of myself and two of my beautiful, healthy, smiling friends—with me, the fat girl, in the middle. That sent me straight to YouTube. When I saw a Success Story about a girl who did Turbo Fire. She was getting dressed for the day, talking and sharing, and I realized—It wasn’t about getting skinny, it was about LIVING. I needed to just start living.

If I could just make myself want to do the workout, I could do life again. TurboFire got me started. Chalene was so positive. I felt like she was my friend—someone who accepted me and encouraged me and cared about me. When she talked in the video, it felt like she was cheering ME on.

In the first 30 days, I only lost 5 pounds. But the physical change was INCREDIBLE. I went down 4 pant sizes and my energy was AWESOME. I lost a total of 40 pounds with TurboFire!

Even better, the cloud started to lift. I actually felt POSITIVE about my future. So I made a HUGE decision to start letting clean eating and exercise lead my life.

Since then, I’ve lost 80 pounds and 11 pant sizes. I’ve been off all medications and even though I still battle depression and anxiety, I now have healthy ways to deal without chemicals and pills.

My body is better. My health is better. My marriage is better. My life is better. I have a purpose in life. I have a drive to make the most of each and every day—and a new passion for health and fitness.

Thanks Beachbody. You saved my life.

Daily Success 5/2/2013 – the last thing I wanted to do was grow old as a fat

If you want to play Texas football (especially in college), you gotta be BIG—and big I was. I was a 6’ 3” strong muscle machine. But years later, I was still big—yet a lot of that muscle wasn’t muscle anymore. Instead, it was…well…let’s just say, it was the opposite of muscle. I was still in my 20’s and the last thing I wanted to do was grow old as a fat person, popping a bunch of pills to stay “healthy”. No, I wanted to be in shape again so I could be a good role model for my future children. And while I knew what I wanted, all I had to do was change. So I did.
25-Mark-BB
I ended up losing over 70 lbs. with P90X/INSANITY Hybrid, P90X2, and INSANITY: THE ASYLUM Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. But it wasn’t like the fat just melted away. During my first round of P90X, I didn’t pay any attention to my diet and my results were pretty pathetic. Next go around, I tracked my calories and it really helped me dial in on my nutrition. I had no idea how big of a role food played in my health. But now I do.

After awhile, losing weight became pretty easy, so I began to focus on how to put on some good weight to get my old body back. I took advantage of the “cold months” here in Texas to Beast Up, and boy, I’m so glad I did. Body Beast was amazing and I loved every single workout. I was lifting all the time and putting on a ton of mass. Plus, eating more was a nice change, although consuming that many calories was tougher than I thought.

Tracking my food and drinking Shakeology were my two “difference-makers” during my transformation. By drinking Shakeology daily, I was getting a healthy, all-natural meal without tons of calories or fat. Plus, I had fewer cravings, more energy, and slept better (even though I wake up at 4:40 a.m. to work out).

What Beachbody did for my life inspired me so much that I decided to become a Coach and “pay it forward”. My true passion is to help others and tell them EVERYTHING I know so they can get to where I am, as fast as possible. These Beachbody programs are life changers, as long as you stick with them and give every workout your all.

Click here to find out more about the Beachbody Challenge and Challenge Groups

My advice: Don’t focus on the scale or short-term goals. Put in the work and the results will come, no matter what. Don’t get discouraged when the scale doesn’t change much in a week. Keep doing what you are doing, and in the long run, you’ll get the results you want. Trust me! I did. And so can you.

Daily Success 4/29/2013 – I was far from home, stressed, depressed, totally alone—and massively overweight.

Growing up, I was always super skinny. But after having my second child, I was left weighing 190 lbs. —and I hated it. After running 4-6 miles a day, I lost 10 lbs. but that was it—I hit a plateau I just couldn’t break. I mean, all that running in the hot sun…and nothing. So I gave up.
22-Sara-Insan-ShO
I felt totally defeated. But when my Army husband got orders to move to Germany, that’s when my life totally fell apart. Our first three months were in a hotel, so I was far from home, stressed, depressed, totally alone—and massively overweight.

But when I saw an INSANITY infomercial, it suddenly clicked. I love fast-paced exercise. INSANITY sure didn’t look boring. And all that sweat dripping off… My husband ordered, and that became my hotel room workout. At first it was hard—so hard I could barely keep up and barely finish half a workout. But I kept pushing play and doing what I could and found myself getting stronger. The weight was coming off.

So I started my second round, but this time, I fueled up with Shakeology, and my results started coming faster and faster until I was down to 141 lbs.! Now I’m back. I’m happier and more energized than ever. My kids have an active mommy and they know that’s better than having a sluggish one. The best part is that I can actually keep up with my Army husband!!!

Click here to find out more about the Beachbody Challenge and Challenge Groups

After having 2 kids and a C-section, I was scared to try INSANITY because I didn’t think I could keep up. Truth is, I couldn’t at first, but week by week I got stronger and pushed harder. I think every mommy who struggles with weight loss should push themselves hard because losing weight after having kids is a whole new ballgame. But a person will never know what they are capable of until they overcome their fear of failure.

And that’s exactly what doing INSANITY did for me.

Daily Success 4/25/2013 – I started to think I was going to be chubby for the rest of my life

I’ve never been able to maintain a healthy weight. I could lose 10 lbs., but I would gain it all right back. I was still bubbly, optimistic, funny Jennifer—but I was hauling around a major amount of excess weight. I started to think I was going to be chubby for the rest of my life. I wanted to fit into a sexy dress or suit for work, but I never shopped for those things because I didn’t want to be that fat person squeezing their butt into something “too small” or that I “shouldn’t be wearing.” I was restricted… ugh!
18-Jennifer-SI6-TF-ShO
Last year I said, this is it. I’m going to be 30! If I don’t get in shape now, I NEVER WILL. I ordered Slim in 6® and started doing the program on my own schedule. Then I joined my Team Beachbody® Coach’s Fit Team and completed Slim in 6, with amazing results. That program took off just enough weight and gave me enough lean muscle to push on to a higher tier of fitness. I really wanted to zap the rest of the fat on my body, so in early October I ordered TurboFire®.

My biggest challenge was motivation. There were days I felt I might not get my workout in because I was tired, or because I hadn’t seen a change in a week and a half. But my Coach and the Facebook group helped me succeed, as did the people I coach who are counting on me. I made time for my routine, stuck with it, and got amazing results. The rest is history!

Click here to find out more about the Beachbody Challenge and Challenge Groups

TurboFire and Shakeology® changed my life. Shakeology is delicious, and gets me super charged to take on my day. Plus, it makes calorie calculations easy. I am happy I used it in conjunction with TurboFire, since nutrition was a huge part of my success. I loved everything about TurboFire! The music is freakin’ amazing, and the kickboxing makes you feel like such a bad…(you know what)! My knees used to hurt, and my shoulders would get really sore, because my muscles were so weak. Now, lifting things is effortless. My leg muscles are strong enough that my knees aren’t strained. Being 40 lbs. lighter helps, too!

My whole body is a rockin’ machine now. I can do 3 sets of full body push-ups. When I take a jog, I feel like I’m running on air, like I’m a feather—well, a feather with a ton of strength and lean muscle! I have NEVER before been a size 6, and my face has slimmed so much, I can see my dimples. Getting physically fit has given me confidence to try new things and achieve new goals. In August 2013, I will graduate with my Master’s degree in Social Work, and I recently got a new job. I even told my husband, “I’m feeling so good, like I can conquer the world, like anything is possible!” I’m living my dream and the sky is the limit. I’m stronger, leaner, longer, sexier, healthier, bouncier, more confident, and have SO MUCH ENERGY! I’m a Beachbody Customer, for life!

Daily Success 4/24/2013 – I started to gain weight due to lack of exercise and eating fast food all the time.

I was always the skinny kid growing up, and spent lots of time playing sports. For the 7 years I was in the US Army, I was also generally fit. But upon leaving the Army in 2003, I started to gain weight due to lack of exercise and eating fast food all the time. Every morning I would grab a chicken biscuit (hey, I was eating chicken, that’s healthy, right?) a soda, and hash browns or fries for breakfast. Then I’d go out for lunch, get the biggest burger on the menu, and eat the entire thing. On the way home, I’d stop at a fast food place or order pizza for dinner. Before I knew it, I had ballooned to 240 lbs. and was always tired.
17-Matthew-X-ShO
One day I woke up completely out of breath, like I had been underwater for hours. I knew I had sleep apnea, and at some point I had probably stopped breathing. Luckily, that time I woke up. I will never forget that turning point, when I knew something was wrong and decided to change my life.

I chose P90X® because I’d seen the infomercials multiple times and figured, “If these guys can do it, so can I.” I liked the fact that P90X is a total-body program, and I didn’t have to buy a bunch of weights or equipment. The greatest challenge I faced was finding the motivation to change my exercise and eating habits. I would start P90X and quit a couple of weeks later, start back up, and then quit again. I did this about 3 times. I finally committed fully when I was invited to Jon Congdon’s “Comeback Kids” P90X Challenge Group by my Beachbody Coach. That time, I completed the entire program.

Click here to find out more about the Beachbody Challenge and Challenge Groups

The motivation and support from Challenge Groups is phenomenal! Posting motivational pictures and quotes on social media sites, as well as seeing others’ results, kept me accountable and helped me reach every goal I set. I drink Shakeology® every morning after I workout, and it’s also played a key role in my transformation. It leaves me feeling full, and gives me tons of energy throughout the day so that I can accomplish all my tasks. I definitely sleep better, and my mood is better than it has been in years.

To date, I have lost 62 lbs. and 22 inches off my body, and am in the best shape of my life. Even when I was in the US Army, running and exercising every day, I never had the definition in my abs, arms, shoulders, and legs that I have now. I’m more active, have more energy, and can accomplish things I only dreamed of when I was overweight. I’ve completed an 11-mile mud run (with more to come!), and am a better employee, husband, and father.
