CoachGShort’s Newletter 12/9/2012 – Tips for the New Years
Here comes New Years! We now only have three weeks until the New Year starts and that means New Year resolutions for many of us, but how many of us have made these resolution but failed to achieve those resolutions? Here are a few tips that can help with making sure that you meet those goals this year and while these can be applied to any goals we are going to focus on working out.
- Set realistic goals – This can be difficult as we only have the results of others when we are starting out. So I recommend that people shoot for a 1/2 lbs. per week if you are trying to lose weight. An example of a non-realistic goal is something like “I will not eat out all year” when you eat out 3-4 times a week. Start small and workout up to your goal. “I will only eat out 2-3 times a week. This will only require a small change into your life.
- Plan ahead – Those that fail to plan, plan to fail. Time is one if not the most valuable thing that we have, and is one of the things that we tend to waste the most of. When setting a goal making sure that we schedule when we are going to be working on that goal(s) is essential.
- Outline Your Plan – Along with planning when you are going to work on your resolution it is important to make sure that you know what to do with the time that you have set aside for your resolution. This is where BeachBody Programs come in so handy. Set aside the time and follow the plan and you will improve.
- Why did you make your resolution? – Making a “Pro” and “Con” list will help you stay on track during the hard days. Most resolution are a Marathon and not a Sprint meaning that we are working to change habits in our lives and that takes time. So focusing on what we are able to do when we achieve our goals can help us push ourselves.
- Talk about it! This is where accountability groups and having a coach comes in. By having people to talk to and hold you accountable you are more likely to accomplish our set goals. There is power in numbers and having a group of people going through the same thing that you are working towards can help motivation. Having a coach to talk to and direct you will allow you direction when you are struggling.
- Reward Yourself – Having a goal that you are going to give yourself when you accomplish your resolution will give you the extra push for you to keep pushing forward. Just make sure that your reward is not counterproductive to you goal. Also remember with the Beachbody Challenge you always get a free t-shirt and the chance to win up to $100K!
Post blood giving snack.
Is giving blood good for you?
When me and my wife lived in Cheyenne, WY on my way home I would give blood every 8 weeks becuase the blood service building was on my way home and I wanted to help out. After moving back to Utah I fell out of the habit of going to give blood. I would try went ever our church would have a blood drive but often it just wasn’t easy for me to make it so as it happened I wouldn’t make it out to give.
Than after about 8 years of missing giving blood I decided that enough was enough!! So a few months back I looked up the closest place that I could donate blood and found ARUP Blood services. I have been doing this for the last 24 weeks. I feel great that I am able to help people but then I wondered, is there other benefit to giving blood? Here is some of the things that I found.
- Men who donate blood are four times less likely to have a heart attack than men who do not donate blood.
- Donating blood gives you a “helper’s high,” and that’s good for your health. Studies show when a person helps another, the helper not only feels good, it is physically good for the helper’s body.
- It lowers the iron buildup in your blood. Men and postmenopausal women tend to accumulate iron in their blood, and several studies have shown this buildup may increase the risk of heart disease. Giving blood removes iron from your body.
- You instantly lose one pound. When you donate blood, you give one pint (16 ounces). Liquid measurements aren’t the same as weight measurements, but in this case, it’s close enough. I’m sure it takes more than a pound of your body’s resources to make a pint of blood.
- You get a free blood test, worth about $300. Before giving your blood to someone, blood banks obviously must test the blood for infectious diseases. If something is found, they will let you know (and the blood will not be used).
- Your body makes newer, more flexible blood cells to replace the ones you donated. More flexible blood cells fit through your small capillaries better, improving blood flow through your body.
So if you have about an hour to give then I challenge you to really give this holiday season and give a part of yourself!!
Other Blood Donation Stats:
- Nothing can replace blood. It cannot be manufactured. It can only come from blood donors.
- Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
- More than 38,000 blood donations are needed each day.
- Less than 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood.
- The average adult has ten pints of blood in her or his body. One pint is given during a donation.
- There are four kinds of “transfusable products” that can be derived from blood: red cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate. Usually, two or three of these are produced from a pint of donated whole blood, so each donation can help save up to three lives.
Over eating this Thanksgiving?
So this afternoon I will be headed to the in-laws to partake of some delicious food but how do we keep from over eating? Here are some tips that hopefully help you not blow the past weeks of working out.
1. Drink water throughout the day, and before you eat dinner. This will help the body realize that it is full.
2. Time yourself and wait 20 minutes before you go back for seconds. The body takes 15-20 minutes to realize that you are full.
3. Eat a salad and I don’t mean a fruit salad with yogurt. I mean a green salad with lots of veggies.
4. Drink a Shakeology a half an hour before dinner. Shakeology is low calorie and has things like Chia seed that will help fill the stomach, plus it will help you get your daily vitamins.
5. Plan, plan, plan and be mindful. Like I said if you fail to plan, you plan to fail but you still need to watch what you are snacking on as a handful here and there easily becomes 600-700 calories!!
What tips do you have that is going to keep you from over eating today?

Fund Raising yard/bake sale!!!
Faith and Robert Nielsen
These two children are going through a lot of physical complications in their journey of life and as such are making quite a bit of runs to hospitals and specialists to find out more specifically what is going on in their bodies.
Faith was born with hypotonia, which is loose ligaments, making her too flexible and hip dysplasia which means her hips are not fully developed making her asymmetrical.
Robert was also born with hip dysplasia, yet not as severe as Faith’s, and he has two holes in his heart making his heart pump more to keep up the oxygen required to maintain his body’s functions.
Both children are smaller than average (which makes them much cuter!) and their airways are also smaller making it more of a task to work on them; as well as their ear canals, among other things.
To help cover the cost of medical expenses that occur a yard/bake sale is being held to help them live a “normal” life. Insurance will only cover so much and the rest has been up to the family and those around them.
So please come out to help support the Nielsen’s this Saturday August 27, 2011 starting @ 7 A.M. Located at 586 N. 100 E. Lehi. The yard sale will be huge and include Furniture, electronics, clothes, books, toys.
